The River Thames

The River Thames dominates Marlow's leisure facilities with sailing, rowing, canoeing, pleasure boat trips and coarse fishing. There is public access to the river as well as car parking at Higginson Park on Pound Lane and Gossmore Lane. Public mooring is available in Higginson Park and Gossmore Lane, and a public slipway for small power boats and dinghies with stepped masts is found at the end of St Peter Street. Extensive riverside open spaces are found at Pergola Field, Riverwoods and Gossmore Lane.

THE THAMES PATH, a new National Trail, which was officially launched on 24 July 1996, passes through Marlow. This path follows the River Thames, mostly along the old Thames towpath, from its source in the middle of a Cotswold meadow near Cirencester to the Thames Barrier in London. Unlike the other 11 long-distance paths in Britain, the Thames route is the first to follow a river for its entire length and pass through the heart of dense urban areas. A combination of level going and easy access by public transport makes it the most family-friendly, and presents an ideal opportunity for inexperienced hikers to break in their walking legs. With 13.5 million people living within 40 miles of somewhere on the trail, the Thames Path is expected to become the most heavily trod trail in Britain.

PLEASURE BOAT TRIPS on the River Thames are run by Salter's Steamers (tel: 01865 243421) and go to Henley and return, departing at 1.30pm from Higginson Park, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from May until September and to Windsor and return via Cookham and Maidenhead, departing at 9.30am from Higginson Park, on Mondays and Fridays from May until September. Short 40 minutes out-and-back trips run from Higginson Park from 11am on Saturdays and Sundays and daily in high season subject to weather and boat availability. Alcoholic and soft drinks, tea, coffee and light snacks served on board. Toilets. Disabled passengers can be carried (please advise in advance). Group bookings welcome. Bookings can be made at Marlow Tourist Information Office in the High Street.
